Grady Bascom Fox, Jr., 94, of Pigeon Forge, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017. Mr. Fox was born on the family farm in Sevierville. He graduated from Sevier County High School at the age of 16. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at 20 years old with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He was employed by Eastman Kodak for 42 years. Highlights of his career include working at Oak Ridge during World War II on the Manhattan Project, working on the design of one of the lunar landing cameras and numerous other NASA and government projects. Mr. Fox was a pioneer of amateur radio in East Tennessee. He was the second person in Sevier County to earn an amateur radio license. He passed the required tests and received his license in 1938 at the age of 15. Mr. Fox enjoyed amateur radio for the rest of his life. He was a member of the American Radio Relay League. This is an organization of amateur radio operators that are pressed into service during emergencies that disrupt normal lines of communications. Mr. Fox was a member of First Baptist Church of Sevierville. Prior to that, while living and working in Rochester, New York, he was a member and deacon of Greece Baptist Church. In addition, he served as the Superintendent of Sunday School and on the building committee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Eileen; and brother, Carroll. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over 70 years, Irene Dixon Fox; sons, Harold and wife Madelyn, and David and wife Deborah; grandchildren, Christopher, Andrew, Steven, and Holly; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Patrick, Grady, Reagan, Angela, Aura, Avery, Kaitlyn, and Stella; brother, Melvin Dale Fox and wife Wanda.
Funeral service 2:00 PM, Sunday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Hyder and Rev. Earl Lane officiating. Interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery.
