Shirek, John 'Jack' 90, of Orlando, died Jan. 26 after a long, happy, and generous life. Born Feb. 5, 1926 in Bismarck, ND.
A WWII Naval officer, fair-to-middlin' golfer, ham radio enthusiast, old movie buff, a really good chef, and a mean saxophone player.
But most important, he was a man of faith who loved God. He adored his wife of 67 years, Ruth, their three children, and five grandchildren with a fierce passion. He was their champion, comforter, and guide. He was a good man.
Jack retired from The First FA, was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, and lived in Southern Oaks for 33 years.
In addition to Ruth, Jack is survived by Barbara (Skip) Fowler, Jon (Nancy Nydam) of Atlanta, and Ken (Paula Goltermann). Fowler grandchildren are Sean (Suzanna) of Los Angeles; Sarah (Dos) Goldsmith of Santiago, Chile; and Michael. Shirek grandchildren are Julianne (Brad) Clayton of Tallahassee; and Olivia (Matt) Conway of Sarasota.
A memorial will be held Friday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church at 1655 Peel Ave., Orlando. Officiating will be Rev. Brad Clayton, senior pastor of Faith Presbyterian Church, Tallahassee.
Donations may be made in Jack's honor to the Russell Home for Atypical Children (russellhome.org) or the (shrinershospitalsforchildren.org).
