Mr. Johnnie Ray 'J.R.' Edmondson, 88, died Friday, April 13, 2012.

The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 3:30 pm in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.

Mr. Edmondson, a native of Martin County, served in the United States Army during WWII. He lived in Halifax County for a number of years before moving to Grifton in 1956 and to Greenville in 1977. He worked for Seaboard Coastline Railroad formerly Atlantic Coastline for 22 years prior to working for the VOA in 1968 until his retirement on December 31, 1986. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed playing golf, bridge, dancing and fishing.

He is survived by his: wife of 63 years, Doris Ballard Edmondson; sons, Carroll Ray Edmondson and wife, Sue, of Cedar Rapids, IA, Stuart W. Edmondson, of San Diego, CA, Phillip M. Edmondson and wife, Ruby, of Hope Mills, NC, and Jeffrey L. Edmondson, of Greenville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 pm at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
