First Call: W4KOW John Preston Welchel, 84, of 2 Whitehaven Drive, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Claude J. and Bobbie Ross Welchel. Mr. Welchel graduated from Parker High School, class of 1939, and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He retired from AT&T after 42 years of service. He was a Mason of #251 AFM Monaghan Lodge 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason; a life member of Hejaz Shrine Temple; amateur radio W4KOW operator; a member of Blue Ridge Amateur Radio Society in Greenville; and was a member of Monaghan Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Jimmie E. Welchel, of the home; a daughter, Pamela Welchel Hancock and husband, Joseph Jr., of Loganville, Ga.; a son, Keith Preston Welchel and wife, Melinda E., of Central, S.C.; a sister, Carolyn J. Dill and husband, David, of Easley; three grandchildren, Stephanie H. Pugh (Dale), Joseph G. (Jay) Hancock III, and Matthew P. Welchel; and two great-grandchildren, Preston Dale Pugh and Kimberlin Paige Pugh. Mr. Welchel was predeceased by two brothers, Claude J. Welchel Jr. and Jack Welchel. Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Monaghan Baptist Church, with visitation from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m., prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, West. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Monaghan Baptist Church Building Fund, 1500 W. Parker Road, Greenville, SC 29617. The family is at the residence.
