Walter Gray Walker, Jr. of Arlington, died at age 78 on Monday, May 17, 2010, of natural causes. He was born on June 6, 1931, son of Walter Gray Walker, Sr. and Verna Haughton Walker. He grew up as an only child in Newport News, Va. where he attended Newport News HS. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1954 and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After graduation, he taught math in Richmond and Newport News. Walker was a statistician for the Federal Government, at the Department of Health Education and Welfare and the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C., and at the Census Bureau in Suitland, Md. After he retired, Walker taught auto mechanics at NOVA Community College. He also traveled on a barge delivering grain to Africa, as the radio operator. He spent most of his life in Arlington and attended the Unitarian Universalist Church in Arlington. He was a long-time ham radio operator (W4NRO) and a Baltimore Orioles baseball enthusiast.
Walker is survived by his children, James Walker of Munich, Germany, Thomas Walker and his wife, Brenda Dunlap of Washington, D.C., and Martha Kwiterovich and husband, Dr. Peter Kwiterovich, Jr. of Baltimore, Md. Walker has two grandchildren, Adam and Shelton Kwiterovich and is expecting a granddaughter any day now. He also leaves behind his former wife, Virginia Bushmiller.
Walker chose to donate his body to science at George Washington University Medical School in Washington, D.C. His memorial service was June 1 at the Unitarian Universalist Church chapel.

Mr. Walker taught math at schools in Richmond and Newport News, Va., before settling in the Washington area in the late 1960s. He worked at the Census Bureau and Department of Housing and Urban Development before joining HEW.
After leaving the federal workplace about 1980, he taught auto mechanics at Northern Virginia Community College.
Walter Gray Walker Jr. was a Newport News native and a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1954.
He was a ham radio operator and once, in retirement, was a radio operator on a barge delivering grain to Africa.
He attended the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington.
His marriage to Virginia Crute Walker ended in divorce. Survivors include three children, James Walker of Munich, Thomas Walker of Washington and Martha Kwiterovich of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.
