STEPHEN NELSON SCHROCK, 85 of Plantation, FL unexpectedly died on Friday, September 2, 2016 of natural causes.
He was born in Ashtabula, Ohio on February 23, 1931 and was the son of Henry E. Schrock and Ida J. (Nelson) Schrock.
He graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1947 at the age of 16 and attended the Central Radio and Television School in Kansas City, MO qualifying as an AM-FM-TV Technician. He worked as a radio engineer at WICA in Ashtabula, OH until he enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1951.
In 1954, Steve married Jean Moss of Geneva, Ohio. Just six weeks after his son Stephen was born in Ashtabula, OH in 1958, the young couple left the cold north for the sunshine of Plantation, FL, where in 1960 their daughter Susan Lori was born. For 58 years Steve raised his family and lived an active life in Plantation. He was at all the kid's ballgames, played golf with his buddies and his son Steve, threw softball with his daughter Susan and was the grill master at home by the pool and at years of family and friends cookouts on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale. He loved the times the family spent in Islamorada, FL where he would maneuver his Boston Whaler through the mangroves and at night until sunrise fish with his son Steve for snapper off the dock.
Steve showed courage, strength and compassion as a husband and a father when his daughter Susan died at 16 in a tragic car accident and when elective heart surgery for Jean in 1999 left her physically and mentally challenged. Steve lovingly and unselfishly cared for Jean and ran the household for over 10 years. These events tested his faith but Steve pushed forward and prevailed. During the 52 years of their loving and faithful marriage, Steve and Jean experienced together many good times and several difficult ones.
Steve was a proud veteran and enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1951. He served in the U. S. Army on active duty during the Korean Conflict stationed in Tokyo, Japan and in National Guard of Ohio attaining the rank of Second Lieutenant until being honorably discharged in 1954. He was a Reservist in National Guard of Ohio until 1961.
Steve worked for the Clevite Ordinance Division of the Clevite Corp. (predecessor to Gould, Inc.) as an electronics engineer engaged in research and development for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy and as Senior Vice President of Sales for Reynolds & Associates, a manufacturer's representative of mainframe computers.
His hobbies included golf, photography, cars, fishing and boating in the Florida Keys and being an amateur ham radio operator with the call name W4PLV.
He attended classes and was a member of the Lifelong Learning Center at Nova Southeastern University. The friends he made at the LLI and on the radio would say that he contributed both his intellect and humor in the classroom and on the radio and in his later years had an active and full life.
He was a member of the Ft. Lauderdale Country Club and the Rotary Club of Plantation.
Steve was predeceased by his wife Jean, who passed in 2007 and his daughter Susan Lori Schrock, who died too young in 1976. He is survived by his son Stephen B. Schrock and his granddaughters Courtney Schrock Conway and Margaret McKenzie Schrock, all of Atlanta, GA. "Poppie Schrock" was a wise, witty, kind, funny and proud father and grandfather who looked forward to being a great-grandfather.
The graveside service for Steve will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, September 10, at Lauderdale Memorial Park, 2001 SW 4th Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33315.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Lifelong Learning Center at Nova Southeastern University http://www.nova.edu/lifelonglearning.
