PILAFIAN, HARRY, 93, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife, Audrey of 65 years, his sons Martin and Robert John, daughter Mary Katherine, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren and was preceded in death by his son Jack David. Lt. Harry Pilafian served in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean war completing 20 years of Military service. He was a survivor of the USS Hugh L. Scott AP-43 when it was torpedoed off the coast of North Africa. One of Harry's great loves was being an Amateur Radio Operator, "W1LJW", "W4SQG", beginning at age 17.
Harry's wife, KB4ZQU, is also a ham radio operator of 25 years. Harry served as president of the South Florida FM Association and member of the Quarter Century Wireless Assoc. (QCWA), Chapter 12 as past president. A ham operator for over 75 years. He received his Master's degree at FIU and served as an Educational Advisor for ARRL (American Radio Relay League). Harry taught ham radio classes at SW Sr. High and basic electronics at South Dade Sr. High over 15 years.
He also coordinated public service "Ham Radio" communications for Miami's annual Orange Bowl Parade, volunteered for hurricane weather disasters, and provided ham radio services for Odyssey of the Mind (OM) competitions. Harry was elected president of the Men's International Alpha Delta Kappa Association and is an honorary member of the "Friends of the Arts" of SIGMA ALPHA IOTA.
He and his wife Audrey have been active members of the Miami and Hollywood Armenian Churches for over 60 years. They have received honors for their extraordinary service and leadership to the church. The Viewing Service will be held at Van Orsdel Funeral Home at 11220 N. Kendall Dr. in Miami, Fl. 33176 on Tues. Dec. 16 from 6:30-10:00 PM with the Prayer Service at 8:00 PM. The Funeral Service will be at Van Orsdel on Wed. Dec. 17 at 10:00 AM with burial at Woodlawn Park North, 3260SW 8th St. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Mary Armenian Church, 4050 NW 100 Avenue, Hollywood,
