McMinnville resident and Coffee County native Bill Gilley, 76, died unexpectedly June 2 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. An electrical engineer with AEDC and a member of McMinnville First Baptist Church where he was a teacher of Cornerstone Men's Sunday School Class and a former deacon, he served his country in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps during World War II. A certified water safety instructor and board member and former chairman of the American Red Cross in Warren County, he was a certified instructor in CPR for the professional rescuer and community first aid and safety. He headed the Red Cross swim program for 30 years, serving over 18,000 students. He was also coach of the McMinnville swim team for three years. He was an avid amateur HAM radio operator, call letters, W4YXA. The son of Evans and Ella Brawley Gilley, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean Haston Gilley; brother and sister-in-law, Guy and Wanda Gilley; special friends, Milton and Alice Faming of Nashville; several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 4 p.m. today at McMinnville First Baptist Church with Fred Bueto officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service today at High's. Memorial contributions may be made to Gilley Pool Fund at Union Planters Bank in McMinnville.
