Moffatt, Barney C. Barney C. Moffatt was born September 8, 1914 in Muskogee, OK. He passed away on April 20, 2009 in Dallas, TX. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Lil T. Moffatt.
He married Lil Thomas in 1936 and in 1940 joined Mid-Continent Airlines in Kansas City as a Radio Operator. He later transferred to the Maintenance Department where he designed and built electronic test equipment used on the carrier's then state-of-the art aircraft, the Lockheed Lodestar. Following the hectic demands upon the carrier during WWII, he was transferred to California where he participated in the airline's postwar transition to an all DC-3 airline. At the time of the merger of Mid-Continent into Braniff Airways in 1953, he was Radio Shop Foreman in Minneapolis and was transferred to Dallas, Texas where he took charge of the Radio, Instrument, Accessory, and Hydraulic shops for the combined airline operations. In addition, he was put in charge of the airline's South American communications system. When Braniff later acquired Panagra Airlines, which operated extensively in South America, he was given additional responsibility for its Sheet Metal, Machine, Wheel, Brake, and Tire shops. Barney retired in 1979 but was subsequently called out of retirement, finally retiring after having worked 40 years in the airline business.
Throughout his working years save for those of WWII when amateur radio operations were restricted, he pursued his ham radio hobby in limited spare time and managed to amass a total of 328 countries worked and confirmed using Morse Code. He celebrated 75 years as a licensed amaterur radio operator, still possessing his original call W5CJZ. He was one of the original founders of the QCWA Chapter 41; was a former president and held other positions in the organization.
Barney was also an active volunteer having worked 20 years as a volunteer at Dallas Taping for the Blind. His most recent volunteer work involved assisting the St. Rita Church Bread Ministry delivering bread, cakes and pies to the Brady Center and Austin Street Shelter for many years. His last delivery was six weeks ago.
He is survived by two nieces through marriage of Enid, OK; many cousins in North Carolina as well as many other loving family members and friends throughout Texas. Visitation will be from 5:00PM - 8:00PM, Sunday, April 26, 2009 at Restland Funeral Home. Services will be held at 12:30PM, Monday, April 27, 2009 at Restland Wildwood Chapel.

I am deeply saddened to report that Barney Moffatt, W5CJZ, quietly passed away last evening (Monday, April 20) at 6:15PM. Barney's service will be at Restland Cemetery (Wildwood Chapel) on Monday, April 27 at 12:30 PM. Visitation will be at Restland Cemetery on Sunday, April 26 from 5 to 8 PM. Barney has meant a lot to me and to all of ham radio and I can thank God that He gave Barney to be our mentor and friend. The Lord called him home, we can all know that Barney was "loaned to us", but he really belongs to his Creator and Lord. I do not know if he has any remaining, living family, but our hearts will recall Barney's time among us has been a blessing in more ways than we can recount nor repay. May God richly bless all who knew and loved Barney. At the next Chapter meeting on May 2nd we should consider donating to the QCWA Scholarship Fund in Barney's name.
