Chief Master Sergeant John R Hunt Sr, USAF Retired, passed away January 13, 2019 at the age of 93. He was born in Greensboro, NC on July 1, 1925 to Ethelda and Paul Hunt.
He grew up picking cotton, working in lumber and sorghum mills, JA Jones Shipyards and a number of other business activities.
He was drafted into the US Navy in 1943, served in the Pacific Theater during World War II in radio operations, maintenance and cryptography activities. He participated in the invasions of Tinian in the Marianas islands, Ulithi in the Caroline islands and Okinawa island with the US Naval Amphibious Forces, while attached to the US Marines.
Making his home in San Antonio, Texas, in 1946 he enlisted in the US Air Force serving in communications and air traffic control with several foreign assignments including the Korean War. He was cited for six aircraft and crew saves. While serving in Asia, he was awarded the Asia Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 stars, Korean Service Medal with one star, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Commendation Medal and numerous other service medals and awards. His military service included an assignment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway, (41) operating on "Yankee Station" off shore of Vietnam, and Barksdale AF Base, during the Cuban Crisis. He continued service in the USAF until his retirement in March, 1964.
He was an active Amateur Radio operator for many years, with Licenses W5DKK, WØJAY, JA9JH, KA2JR and KR6JR. He was active in AF MARS radio programs, serving as Director Operations Region 4 and as Air Force representative to the Amateur Radio Regulatory Board while stationed on Okinawa.
He received bachelor's Degrees in Business Administration and Criminal Justice.
He worked with several large Electronics manufacturing companies and joined Southern Steel Company in San Antonio in 1970. Serving as Vice President of Operations and member of the Board of Directors.
In 1982 he established Consultants Associates, consulted with city, county, state, federal government and general contractors in installation, operation and maintenance of locking systems in prisons and jails.
He was a member of the American Corrections Association (ACA) and American Society of Testing of Materials (ASTM), serving on two sub-committees.
He was very active with the U.S. Olympic Committee, serving with the USOC House of Delegates. He was Director of Competition for the National Governing Body Olympic shooting Sports. He served as Team Manager and Coach for several US International Clay Target and Moving Target Shooting Teams. He was Director of Clay Target Shooting for the 1984 Olympics. He was a member of the Union International de Tir (UIT) Clay Target Shooting Committee, and a Class "A" US Olympic Judge for Clay Target Shooting, participating in several Olympics and World Championships.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Emma Jo Hunt, and his son, Michael Preston Hunt.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn C Hunt, his son J.R. Hunt Jr and his wife Vickie, Grandchildren: Suzette Nicole Clark, Amber Jo Weisenmiller, John R Hunt, III, Kelly Leigh Lester, Jessica Renee Hunt, Dawn T Hunt-Yates, and Greg Hunt; Great Grandchildren: Jonathan Durboraw, Daycotah Durboraw, Ryan Weisenmiller, Maedene Weisenmiller, Kristen Lester, Josalynn Lester, Brittney Lester, Chloe Southerland, Erin Hunt, and Monica Drager, and great-great grandchild: Blakley Arianna Durboraw.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
