Dr. Joseph Weldon Butler, 84, of Lubbock died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, after a lengthy illness. Rev. Butler served Methodist churches in Folette, Vega, Amarillo, Borger, Midland, Big Spring, Hereford and Roswell, N.M. during his 37-year pastoral career. He received a Doctor of Divinity from McMurry University in 1970.
Rev. Butler is survived by his wife, Jeanne; and his five children, Don, Patty, Tim, Janice, Rick, and their respective families. Dr. Butler served as the executive secretary of the Northwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church located in Lubbock for three years. He was W5ILJ, an amateur radio operator, an avid Colorado deer hunter, and was a radio operator in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, at Franklin-Bartley Funeral Home, 4444 South Loop 289, in Lubbock. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at the Bowman Chapel of the First United Methodist Church, 14 11 Broadway in Lubbock. Burial will follow in the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
