Reverend Joseph C. Kolb, 91, died October 7, 2016. Father Kolb was born on February 2, 1925 in Edmond, Oklahoma one of five children of John and Sophia Martin Kolb. He attended Saint Gregory's University High School, Shawnee; Saint Francis Seminary, Bethany, Oklahoma; Kendrick Seminary, Saint Louis, Missouri and Saint John's Seminary, San Antonio, Texas.
He was ordained on May 23, 1953 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Hope, Oklahoma City for the Diocese of Oklahoma City and Tulsa and served the people of Oklahoma for sixty three years.Father Kolb served in 14 different parishes in Oklahoma: Associate Pastor, June 1953 -December 1953, Christ the King, Tulsa; Associate Pastor, January 1954 -May 1954, St. Peter Church, Woodward; Associate Pastor, May 1954 -May 1957, St. Mary Church, Ardmore; Pastor, May 1957 -August 1964, St. Helen Church, Frederick, where he supervised the building of the new church; Pastor, August 1964 -August, 1965, Sacred Heart, Sapulpa; Pastor, August 1965 -June 1970, St. Mary Church, Medford; Pastor, June 1970 -June 1978, St. Peter Church, Guymon (Mission: Sacred Heart, Hooker); Pastor, June 1978 -June 1982, St. Anthony of Padua, Okeene (Mission: St. Thomas, Seiling); Pastor, June 1982 -June 1987, Prince of Peace, Altus; Pastor, June 1987 -June 1990, St. Rose of Lima, Watonga (Missions: Sacred Heart, Hitchcock; St. Joseph, Loyal); Pastor, June 1990 -June 1997, St. Joseph Church, Hennessey (Mission: St. Camillus, Marshall); Pastor, June 1997 -May 1999, Sacred Heart, Mangum &Sts. Peter and Paul, Hobart; Pastor, Sept. 1999 -June 2003, St. Ann Church, Elgin (Missions: Mother of Sorrows, Apache; OLPH, Sterling).
Elgin and missions were his last assignments before retirement from active ministry in 2003.Father Kolb was the 2009 Father Stanley Rother Faithful Shepherd Award recipient and served as Spiritual Moderator for the OCCW for over 30 years.During World War II, Father Kolb, prior to entering the seminary, was a radio operator with the 103rd Division of the Seventh Army in France and southern Germany. His service and devotion to duty led to a Bronze Star. This service also led to his lifelong ham radio operator status. W5JEB has signed off.
In addition to being a ham radio operator, Fr. Kolb flew his own single engine plane and with his beloved mother traveled over the United States visiting friends and relatives.Father Kolb was predeceased by his parents, brothers John A. Kolb and Herman S. Kolb and sisters Anna Marie Kolb and Sophia Elizabeth Kolb.
He is survived by nieces Marilyn Shotwell (husband Dan), Agra, Oklahoma and Dorothy Posel (husband, Mitch), Mena, Arkansas and nephew James S. Kolb (wife Sandy), Washington, D.C. Also grand nieces Ameli and Steffi; grand nephews Nathaniel and Mitch, Jr.; great grand niece Siena and great grand nephews Jake and Mitchell, III.A Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 PM on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at St. Ann's Nursing Home Chapel, 9400 St. Ann Dr., Oklahoma City, OK 73162. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, 900 South Littler Avenue, Edmond on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Cemetery, North Boulevard and Danforth, Edmond.
