James Derwin King, Derwin or "Flash" to his family and friends, was born on December 22nd, 1926 and passed to Heaven at 90 years old on February 23rd, 2017.
He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Mary Katherine Ross King; sons, Ross and David King; granddaughter, Kristin King; and great-granddaughter, Harmony Myhre.
Derwin earned his HAM Radio license (W5LUU) at only 15 years old and was a Navy Veteran of WWII. He became a proud graduate of LSU (1951) with a Bachelor's in Electron Physics and a Master's in Physics from St. Mary's University (1963). Derwin spent most of his professional career working at Southwest Research Institute until retirement in 1999. During his career, some of the areas he made advances in were nuclear magnetic resonance, measuring human bone density, detecting explosives in baggage and other projects for NASA and the government. His work earned him 53 patents.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at University Baptist Church, 6465 Babcock Road, San Antonio, Texas, on March 11th at 11:00 am. Reception to follow. Flowers may be sent directly to the church.
