Robert Eugene Garner passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2011.
He was born August 8, 1922 in Rogers County, OK, to the late Oral and Alice Vaughan Garner and has been a resident of Mandeville since 1971.
The beloved husband of the late Almeta Greathouse Garner, he is survived by two sons, Stephen T. Garner and Kimbal R. Garner; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Thomas A. (Laura) Garner; one brother, Donald Garner and one granddaughter, Alison Garner. He was preceded in death by one son, Thomas A. Garner.
A decorated veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mr. Garner served his country proudly as a radioman in the Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1946. He was active in amateur radio from 1938 until his death. He is a graduate of Mattoon (IL) High School, class of 1941, and Eastern Illinois University, class of 1950.
Mr. Garner married Almeta Greathouse, who also attended EIU, in August, 1949. Upon completion of an MSc from Michigan State University in 1952, he worked as a geophysicist for Chevron until his retirement in 1985.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services at 3:00 PM on Monday, February 14, 2011 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433.
Visiting hours will begin Monday at 1:00 PM.
