St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville, Louisiana, for Joseph Bradley 'JB' Landry, age 93, who died Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Dauterive Hospital in New Iberia. Interment will follow at St. Michael Mausoleum. Reverend Rusty P. Richard will be the Celebrant.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Pellerin Funeral Home in St. Martinville on Friday, April 12 from 4:00 p.m. (please respect family time by not arriving early) until 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday, April 13, from 8:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral. A rosary will be prayed Friday, April 12, at 7:00 p.m., led by Reverend Ed Degeyter.
JB was born on October 2, 1919, and was raised in St. Martinville. Other than his military assignments and brief periods of time living in Ramah, New Mexico, and Bossier City, Louisiana, JB spent his entire life in St. Martinville. He married Verna Martha Lasseigne in 1947. They had three sons, and had been married 59 years at the time of Verna's death in 2007. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a P.O.W. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. He later joined the United States Naval Reserve and was called up during the Korean War, and he was given the rank of Chief Petty Officer, which was the equivalent of his rank of Master Sergeant in the Army. He was honorably discharged from both of these branches of the military. After his military service, JB enrolled at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), where he majored in Industrial Arts Education, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. After earning his undergraduate degree, he enrolled in Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and earned a Masterâs Degree in Educational Administration in 1954. In 1956, JB secured employment with the Social Security Administration, where he worked the majority of his adult life. He worked for SSA first in Shreveport, then in Lafayette. When the SSA opened a branch in New Iberia, JB transferred to that office which was, at the time, on Iberia Street across from the Iberia Parish Courthouse. He worked there until his retirement in 1985. He was involved in numerous organizations: Knights of Columbus (3rd Degree Knight and 4th Degree Knight), the Cursillo (Number 2), Boy Scouts of America (Silver Beaver Award and Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim Grand Canyon Award), Veterans of Foreign Wars, Woodmen of the World (Past President) and Civil Air Patrol. He was an active ham radio operator (W5QY) until the last few years, and was a member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association. He was also involved in his church parishes throughout the years as a lector, usher, instructor of Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes, and occasional lecturer in pre-marriage courses.
JB is survived by his sons, Philip Lee Landry (married to Pauline Bienvenu Landry) of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, Marcel Peter 'Marc' Landry (married to Barbara Boilek Landry) of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Paul Albert Landry (married to Patricia Suire Landry) of New Iberia, Louisiana; by his grandchildren from Phil and Pauline: Andrea Landry Pourciau (married to Andre Pourciau), Aaron Landry (married to Amanda Leonards Landry), and Kevin Landry (married to Carolyn DeCuir Landry); his grandchildren from Marc and Barbara: Michelle Landry and Nicole Landry; and his grandchildren from Paul and Patty: SPC (U.S. Army) Jonathan 'Jon' Landry (married to Liz Terry Landry) and Sarah Landry. He is also survived by great-grandchildren from Aaron and Amanda: Alex Landry and Abbigale Landry, and from Kevin and Carolyn: Colin Landry. Finally, he is survived by his sister, Florence Enderlee, and his brothers, Kernice Landry and Lynn Landry.
JB was predeceased by his wife, Verna Martha Lasseigne Landry; his parents, Alcide Landry and Marie Zeolide Melancon Landry; his brothers, Wiltz Landry, Ray Landry, and Francis Landry; his sisters, Rena Landry and Annie Curry; and a great-grandchild, Cody Pourciau.
Pallbearers will be: Philip L. Landry, Marcel P. 'Marc' Landry, Paul A. Landry, Aaron C. Landry, Kevin P. Landry, and SPC Jon E. Landry.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Consolata Home for its care of JB in the last 20 months of his life, and Reverend Joseph H. Stemmann at Consolata for his warm and gentle pastoral care and his assistance in easing JB's transition from his home to a nursing facility. And thanks, as well, to the staff at Dauterive Hospital for its efforts during the last week of his life.
