Tanner H. Freeman, Jr., died Wednesday, May 27, 2009. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on May 16, 1921 to Tanner H. Freeman and Zoe Parks Freeman. He was 88 years old.
In 1939, he graduated from Jefferson High School, San Antonio, Texas. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in June, 1942 while attending Texas A&M as a third year engineering student and was called to active duty January 1, 1943.
He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt., Navigator with the 8th Air Force, 491st Bomb Group. In North Pickingham, England, Tanner was promoted to 1st Lt. and served as lead navigator on a B-24.
After the war, Tanner returned to Texas A&M and received a Civil Engineering Degree in the summer of 1946. After eight years in Dallas, Texas he moved his young family to Corpus Christi.
In 1954, he started Tanner H. Freeman General Contractor. He was a well respected member of the business community for 30 years, retiring in 1984.
Tanner's call sign was W5YAO during his years as a HAM radio operator. He served as President of the S. TX. Chapter of Associated General Contractors in 1963, 1976, and 1977. He was a member of the Southside Rotary Club and the Corpus Christi Camera Club before retiring to his beloved Tightwad Ranch.
Tanner is preceded in death by his parents and brother, David Freeman.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Patricia, and his children; Jeffrey Freeman (Patty), Golden Co., TexAnn Borden Sternberg (Ric), Round Mountain, Texas, Tanya Stephenson of New Mexico, Stephen Lohse of Honolulu, HA., Charlotte Howden (Michael), Ingleside, Texas, Cynthia Mercer (Curtis) Round Rock, Texas; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Interment will follow service at Seaside Memorial Park.
