Dr. Martin Goodwin, age 87, of Portales, NM died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at the University Medical Center in Lubbock, TX. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Sunday, April 5, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church in Portales with Rev. Phillip Million officiating. In lieu of food or flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Christian Childrens Home, 1356 Hwy 236, Portales, NM 88130 in memory of Martin Goodwin.
Dr. Goodwin was born August 8, 1921 to Ray Star and Emma (Brune) Goodwin in Vancouver BC, Canada. He came to the United States in 1948. March 7, 1980 he married Cathy Dennison at Cannon Air Force Base. He earned his Bachelor's of Science degree in Agriculture at the University of British Columbia in 1943 and earned his Medical Degree at McGill University, Montreal Quebec in 1948. He served his intern and residency at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas from 1948 to 1952. In 1952 he was an instructor of radiology at the University of Texas. He served as a Captain in the Medical Corp of the US Army from 1952 until 1955 and served as a Colonel in the Medical Corp in the US Air Force from 1975 to 1979.
Dr. Goodwin practiced medicine specializing in radiology in Clovis, Portales, Tucumcari, and Cannon AFB from 1955 to 1996. He also served as the chairman of the board of directors of the New Mexico Health and Human Services, and as a clinical professor of health at Western Michigan University and Eastern New Mexico University. Dr. Goodwin was a fellow of the American College of Radiology. He was a member of the New Mexico Radiology Society of New Mexico, Thoracic Society, Radiology Society of North America, Society of Nuclear Medicine, American College of Nuclear Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians, First Presbyterian Church, the Elks Lodge, the Lions, the Masons, and the Shriners. He was a Ham Radio enthusiast, he loved traveling and politics, and was the team doctor at Clovis High School for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Cathy of the home; a daughter, Suzanne Goodwin Trout and husband Jon of Grand Junction, CO; step-children, Diana Westover and husband Danny of Houston, TX, and Chuck Glikas and wife Judith of Clovis, NM; his ex-wife's daughter, Nancijane Hilling of Clovis, NM; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Walter.
