MY OLDER BROTHER, DON, W5KCP (LATER K5EL), GOT ME INTERESTED IN AMATEUR RADIO.
I WAS LICENSED IN 1953 AS A NOVICE CLASS OPERATOR. MY CALL SIGN IS THE ORIGINAL
ISSUE. WORKED MY WAY UP TO EXTRA CLASS A FEW YEARS LATER. I WORKED IN TWO WAY
RADIO SERVICING WHILE ATTENDING TEXAS TECH. AFTER GRADUATING IN 1961, I WAS EM-
PLOYED BY A LARGE TRUCK TRANSPORT COMPANY FOR MANY YEARS. DURING THIS TIME,
I ALSO SERVED AS A RESERVE DEPUTY SHERIFF. IN ADDITION, I WORKED PART TIME FOR
AN AMBULANCE COMPANY. IN MY EARLIER YEARS, I WORKED A LOT OF DX. I HAVE DXCC
IN BOTH PHONE AND CW AND SEVERAL W.A.S. AND W.A.C. AWARDS. I ALSO HAVE A 30 WPM
CODE PROFIENCY CERTIFICATE. I HOLD A RADIOTELEPHONE SECOND CLASS LICENSE NOW
CALLED A GROL. LATER, MY WIFE AND I OPERATED A RADIO SHACK FRANCHISE FOR SEVERAL
YEARS, BEFORE RETIRING IN 2001. SINCE THEN, I HAVE SERVED AS A VOLUNTEER FIRE-
FIGHTER UNTIL 2011. I OBTAINED A BASIC FIREFIGHTING CERTIFICATE IN 2005 FROM THE
SFFMA. WE ARE NOW LIVING IN A RETIREMENT CENTER IN SAN ANGELO. I ENJOY WORKING
SIX METERS AND
TWO METER AND 70 CM MOBILE. MY WIFE AND I STILL LISTEN TO THE FIRE, E.M.S. AND S.O.
TRAFFIC ON OUR SCANNER. GOT ON 6 MTRS FOR FIRST TIME LAST OCTOBER. AM NOW WORKING ON 6 MTR W.A.S.
