Joseph (Joe) Dante Provenza died and went home to the Lord after a long illness in Long Beach, California on April 24, 2018 at the age of 89. He was the beloved husband of Domenica Cannice Provenza and is survived by his stepsons Michael Cannice of Sterling, VA and Peter Cannice of Phoenix, AZ, sister Marie Cascio of Arbutus, MD, brother James (Ruth) Provenza of Oceanside, CA and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnephews and grandnieces. He is preceded in death by his stepdaughter Karen Cannice of Phoenix, AZ, first wife Elizabeth (Sis) of Long Beach, CA, and his mother Sara Glorioso Provenza and father Salvatore Provenza.
Joe was born on October 06, 1928, in Baltimore, MD. He moved to California in 1955 where he was a mechanic and a member of the National Gard. During the Cuban Missile Crisis he was activated as a Master Sargant serving at Fort Irvin Army base. He began his career with CalTrans in 1964 and continued with CalTrans until his retirement in 1992 where he was one of the first two persons trained to install and repair computer traffic signals. Post retirement Joe started his own consulting business and was a renowned expert in his chosen field of Traffic Engineering. He was a longtime ham radio operator W6UPN and over the years provided disaster support services and training to many disaster preparedness groups.
He was a communicant at St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Long Beach, CA where he served as an usher for many years. Additionally, he was a member of the Sons' of Italy. Joe was extremely talented and those who knew him were always welcomed to a warm joke. Joe will be missed by all his family, his many friends and coworkers.
A viewing is scheduled for Monday April 30, 2018 between the hours of 5:00 and 8:00 PM, Rosary at 7 PM, at All Souls Mortuary in Long Beach, CA. A catholic funeral mass will take place on Tuesday May 01, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Long Beach, CA. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joe's life.
