It is with deep sadness we report the passing of QCWA # 29428, Harry Hodges, W6YOO of Escondido, CA on June 25, 2019 at the age of 90. He was first licensed in 1973 as ZP5HZ (Paraguay) Other calls held were WA6YOO and W6YM.
Harry was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1928. Joined US Merchant Marine at age 16 in October 1944 serving until April 1946. Joined US Army July 1946. Completed Basic Parachute Training in 1950 at Fort Benning,GA. Served two Airborne tours with the 82d Airborne Division. Qualified as a Freefall Parachutist in and Master Paraxhutist competing at a number of parachuting competitions worldwide, and served as the Chief Judge at the Turkish National Championships in Ankara, Turkey in 1969. Received battlefield appointment to 2d Lt in Korea, July 1952. Served in various capacities at a number of US and overseas posts. Retired as Lieutenant Colonel, Corps of Engineers on May 31, 1974.
Hodges has undergraduate degree from University of Omaha (1964) and MBA from National University (1979). Worked as Director of Plant Operations at Mesa Vista Hospital in San Diego from 1977 until retirement in 1990. Received Conditional Class US license in 1973 as WA6YOO and upgraded to Advanced and Extra Class in 1987.
Married to Jerry Allaine Carter, W6JAC in 1982. Awards include: Induction into the San Diego DX Club's Hall of Fame, A-1 Operator, DXCC TOP HONOR ROLL (Mixed) and DXCC Honor Roll (Phone and CW), 5BDXCC with 12,17 and 30 meter endorsements, DXCC Challenge Plaque with 2000 endorsement, 5BWAS, 5BWAZ, IOTA Plaque of Excellence (800+) and separate DXCC awards for Mixed, SSB, CW, 10,12,15,17,20,30,40,80 meters and RTTY. Member of FISTS (5966), 10-10 Nr 823. Hodges was former ARRL Section Manager (San Diego Section), Past President of Palomar Amateur Radio Club, Past President of EARS, past Secretary/Treasurer of San Diego DX Club, Past President, San Diego Chapter 14 Quarter Century Wireless Association, VE Team Leader (Escondido, CA) for SANDARC-VEC. Member of ARES and 35 year member of US Army MARS (AAR9LX). Hobbies other than Amateur Radio include travel, photography and gourmet cooking.
