Philip Shafer, born December 6, 1918 to Thurman Shafer and Juanita Shafer Estill, passed away October 25, 2016 at the Bruce McCandless Colorado State Veterans Community Living Center, Florence, CO.
Preceded in death by parents; brother, Floyd Shafer; wife, Ruth Shafer; son, Ronald Shafer; and stepson, Robert N. Countway III. Survived by his stepson, Thomas (Suzie) Countway, DPM; grandchildren, Joan (Clayton) Briggs, Cynthia (Michael) Stiller, Steven (Berlyn) Countway; 10 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren. All adored him.
Philip served proudly in the Coast Guard during WWII and Navy during the Korean War as Chief Radio Officer.
He became an engineer after serving his country, then met/married Ruth while they both worked at Hughes Aircraft, Tucson, AZ.
He enjoyed photography, classical music, collecting stamps and coins, playing pool and chess, fishing, and was an avid Ham radio enthusiast (W7BM). He enjoyed good food and wine, and many times, boasted to be the founding member of the "clean plate club!"
Philip was a gentleman, and maintained his dignity, charm, and gratefulness to the very end.
Memorial service December 2, 2016, 5pm at Golden Age Center, 728 Main St, Canon City, CO.
