G.A. "George" Cunningham, Jr, age 87, of Floral City, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness.
Mr. Cunningham was born in Charleston, West Virginia, on November 15, 1921, to the late G.A. and Frances (Irwin) Cunningham, Sr, and moved to this area in 1997 from Port Angeles, Washington.
He retired from AT&T as a communications technician with 45 years of service. Mr. Cunningham served our country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War, having been honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant.
His memberships include the VFW in Port Angeles, Washington, Telephone Pioneers of America, Communication Workers of America, National Association of Radio & Television Engineers, Quarter Century Wireless Association and the Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charleston, WV. George enjoyed being a licensed pilot, having flown for over 50 years, trains and operating his ham radio for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Willie D. Cunningham; his son, Dr. George A. (Bhavna Mehta) Cunningham III of San Diego, CA; two daughters, Mary E. (Ted Rasch) Cunningham of Seattle, WA, and Marci A. Cunningham of San Luis Obispo, CA; two stepsons, Dr. Daniel G. (Sylvia) Hoglund of Oak Ridge, TN, and John R. (Carol) Hoglund of Floral City; and two grandchildren, Daniel & Gus.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, March 6, 2009, at 12 p.m. from the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home of Inverness, with Rev. Eddie Quates officiating. Burial will follow at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, with full military honors provided by the Floral City VFW Post # 7122.
