Lawrence Matheny Patterson, M.D. 87 years old, passed away peacefully on March 16th, 2011, in Minneapolis, MN, surrounded by family. He was born October 6, 1923, the son of a pioneer Seattle family.
Larry attended Gonzaga Prep and University, graduated St. Louis U. Medical School, and later went on to receive his board certification in anesthesiology. On June 7, 1947, he married Helen Marie Johnson in Minneapolis, whereupon they returned to his Seattle home to raise their family. He practiced for many years at Providence Hospital & later at Group Health Cooperative in Seattle. After moving to Minnesota he finished out his career in public health.
He worked as a longshoreman, on a sternwheeler in the remote regions of the Yukon River to help pay for college. While in Medical School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and received his commission, (Lieutenant J.G.), serving in the Korean War on the troop transport "Marine Adder" and was present at the invasion of Inchon.
He was a true renaissance man. His interests were many: electrical engineering, carpentry, lithography, scuba diving, boating, and ham radio. A passionate ham radio operator, he received his license at the early age of 14. He was a musician, avid reader, and world traveler, but most of all he was a devout Catholic and man of charity. He will be deeply missed.
