Harry Robert Hyder was born in New York, NY, on July 11, 1920.
He graduated from Townsend Harris High School and attended the College of the City of New York.
From 1942-1945 he held a commission in the U.S. Maritime Service and served as radio officer on merchant ships. He saw action in the Mediterranean theater. His voyages took him as far as Australia.
In 1945 he married Claire Worth of New York, NY. They had one adopted child who is now deceased. Claire died around 1980.
Harry Hyder worked as an electronics engineer for Bendix Radio in Towson, MD.
In 1957 the Hyders settled in the Phoenix area, where he worked as an electronics engineer for Motorola.
Hyder was an amateur radio operator since his teens. His most recent call letters were W7IV.
Hyder had a lifelong interest in the American West. After moving to Arizona he spent his vacations traveling around the Western states.
He was a great reader, particularly about American and British history. He also enjoyed listening to classical music. Hyder was a long-time volunteer in the periodicals department of the Tempe library, where he also conducted book discussion groups.
He is survived by his sister, Estelle Hyder, of Queens, NY, his brother, William Hyder, and nephew, James Hyder, both of Columbia, MD, as well as his niece, Rev. Alison Hyder, of Truro, MA.
