HOHENTHANER, Edwin Francis, age 86 of Cowan, passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born on March 5, 1931, in Zephyrhills, Florida, the eldest of five children of the late Barbara Forbes and John Francis Hohenthaner.
Edwin attended schools in Michigan and Florida before joining the Army Paratroopers in 1948. He served in Japan during the allied occupation and went into active combat when the Korean War began. He served for 15 years in the Army and retired from the Air Force in 1968. In addition to Japan and Korea, he served in Germany, Alaska and numerous other states around the country specializing in electronics and communications.
Edwin lived a number of years in Oregon and Washington State where he enjoyed mining and panning for gold. The hobby that has brought him daily pleasure was amateur radio (W7LGD). He was licensed by the FCC as an amateur radio operator in 1959. For almost 60 years he has talked with friends all over the United States and has made many contacts with people all over the world. He served as an officer of Ham Radio Clubs in Oregon, Washington, Michigan, Florida and Tennessee.
He was a member of the Cowan First Baptist Church and loved attending services and Bible study each week with his friends.
He also enjoyed meeting monthly with comrades in the Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Munch of Cowan; his sons, Edwin (Janet) Hohenthaner of Lapeer, Michigan and Steven (Karen) Hohenthaner of Goodells, Michigan; daughters, Audrey Paupert of Port Huron, Michigan and Lori Monty of Ann Arbor, Michigan; step-son, Don (Valerie) Patterson of Sonoma, California and Sarasota, Florida; step-daughter, Veronica (Rick) Carmean of Winter Garden, Florida, Running Deer Hunter, Hyde Park, Vermont and Ulster Park, New York; brothers, Richard (Elfriede) Hohenthaner of Yale, Michigan and Vance (Donna) Hohenthaner of Land O' Lakes, Florida; sisters, Naida (Robert) Schelter of Lansing, Michigan, and Jean Wright of Winter Haven, Florida; and numerous precious grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Edwin wanted to extend special thanks to his many loyal friends, his patient Hospice nurse, Tracy, and the staff of the Veteran's hospitals who have offered aid and comfort during his illness.
Visitation with the family will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017, from 11 am to 1 pm at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 1 pm in the Moore-Cortner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. L.Z. Johnson officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Hillsboro Memorial Gardens in Brandon, Florida.
