First Call: W7PDI in 1951
Marshall R. Smith died Wednesday, January 27, 2010. He was born June 17, 1918, in Kilgore, Idaho, to G.R. Smith and Carrie R. Smith. His wife Reva was with him at the time of death.
He served in the US Army Air Force during World War II. He was employed as an airline pilot until retirement at which time he made his home in Meridian, Idaho.
His survivors include his children, Kay Wray (Dick) Alter, Sue (Russ) Fay, and Sisters Iris Smith and Barbara (Ted) Hanson. There are over 30 grandchildren who will be regaled with stories about grandpa for years to come.
He was known as "Smitty", "Marsh", "Marshall", "Captain Smith" and "Grandpa".
I knew him as my dad. His life will be defined by his love of the sky and he was never happier than when he was in an airplane. He flew many miles and recorded them carefully in his log book.
There wasn't a child or animal that didn't take to dad's charm. He chose the most select companions in his lifetime and they graced our lives with their love. He was always searching for answers to his questions and was a self educated man. His love of learning kept him well versed on many subjects. There wasn't a harder worker or more generous person and he was always ready with a helping hand. He loved to joke, laugh and he made a mean batch of spaghetti sauce. And boy, did he love to talk! His wide grin warmed many lives. Dad loved his family and most of all his "angel on earth". For those who really knew and loved my dad, take comfort in this saying. "What the heart has once owned.it shall never lose.."
I've got your six, Dad. I love you.
