"Jim" JohnsonJohnson, James J. "Jim" Ann Arbor, MIAge 86, died at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. Jim was born April 26, 1922 in the original St. Joe's in Ann Arbor and grew up in the Burns Park neighborhood. He dated his future wife Kay Hood throughout high school and graduated from Ann Arbor High in 1940. Jim attended Dartmouth College after high school, and later attended Notre Dame and the University of Michigan. He married Kay in 1944, while he was serving in the US Navy. Officers were not allowed to marry so the wedding was a secret. In his career, Jim held a variety of positions in construction and facility management with Detroit Bank& Trust, Ann Arbor Bank&Trust, and Giffels Associates. Throughout the years, Jim was an avid ham radio operator and developed many friends via that medium. In later years, he was an active member of the Bethlehem United Church of Christ, including his participation with a small group that became another part of his family. Jim also developed lasting friendships during his daily visits to the County Farm Recreation Center. He will be remembered by countless good friends, each of whom Jim considered family. Jim is preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Kay (Hood) Johnson and his daughter Laurie (Johnson) Lukonic. Jim is survived by his son, Joseph T. (Deborah) Johnson of Oklahoma City, his daughter, Anne K. Johnson of Ann Arbor, his son-in-law, Gregory M. Lukonic of Ann Arbor, his sister Margarita (William) Acton of Glen Mills PA and four loving grandchildren: Alex, Daniel, Rachel and Benjamin. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Jim's life is being planned and will be announced.
