Springdale - Floyd Grossoehme, age 89, died January 21, 2021. He was born to Ernest and Bessie Downen Grossoehme, on July 17, 1931, in Peru, Nebraska. He attended Nebraska State College in Peru, then left to join the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He served l950-1953 aboard the USS LSM(R)-404 as an Electrician Technician/Petty Officer Second Class. Following his discharge, he completed his education at Peru State and graduated in 1956. He then accepted a position as an electrical engineer at General Electric Aircraft Engines. He retired after 37 years, rising to become a sub-section manager of digital design engineers whose work focused on translating pilots' cockpit inputs to changes in the engine geometry. He holds 5 US patents and received several design awards. He is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn Hughes Grossoehme, with whom he had two children, Daniel (Henrietta) and the late David, and grandson Nathaniel. An avid sailor, he and JoAnn enjoyed racing their sailboats at Acton Lake in Oxford, OH. Floyd was active in retirement as an amateur radio operator, using Morse Code exclusively (cw), as W8FUP, after having originally received his license while he was in high school as W0MJN. He received an award for having made contact with amateurs in over 150 countries. He enjoyed motorcycle touring, flying model airplanes, and in recent years baking various breads. After reconnecting with the Grossoehme family in Germany in 1994, he and JoAnn visited the family there and sailed with them in the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas. He was very active in the Episcopal Church, serving as Vestry member, rector search committee member, and completed Education for Ministry at the University of the South. Private services will be held. Interment at Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Children's Heart Association, Christ Church Glendale, or the charity of your choice.
