First Call: N8VOD
In 1992, I earned my first ticket as a no-code tech and eventually worked my way to extra class (20 wpm). Along the way I've held the following callsigns: N8VOD, KG8CL, AA8UH, and finally W8JJ.
My primary home station consists of an Elecraft K3 (Serial #3794), P3 Pan Adaptor, KPA-500 solid-state amplifier, K-Pod remote VFO, Two Elecraft SP3 speakers, Zerofive Vertical (43') with 60 ground radials, and Begali Sculpture and Graciella CW keys.
The eSSB/SSB audio chain at W8JJ is as follows:
Heil PR-781 microphone, Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator, Soundcraft EMP 6 channel mixer, W2IHY iBox audio for level matching, Sony MDR7506 headphones, Isobar 8 Ultra power management, and custom built Canare Star Quad audio cables with Neutriks XLR connectors.
My preferred software applications are N1MM for contesting, N3FJP for general logging, Fldigi and WSJT-X for digital modes.
My portable cottage station is situated on 20 wooded acres in northern Michigan. It features a loaded Elecraft KX3 with the mini PX3 pan adaptor, Heil PR-40 microphone, W2IHY audio processing, KXPA-100 amplifier, OM 4000 HF 4K amplifier, Nye Viking MB-V-A 3K tuner, and Begali Signature CW key. Antenna is Optibeam 14-6 (6-20 meters) at 72' with wire antennas for the low bands. Tower base and first section is in the ground. The tower installation will be resume spring 2018.
In 2007, I completed 20 years of service with the Michigan Department of Corrections to pursue a teaching career. I'm currently a tenured associate professor of criminal justice at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan.
I have a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a masters degree in organizational leadership & administration from Saginaw Valley State University. I also hold a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership & Change from Antioch University in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
