I was first licensed as WN8MSF and WA8MSF, simultaneously in the Spring of my Freshman year in High School, 1964. I was a combo Novice and Technician, as was customary in those days for technically proficient beginners at the 5WPM level.
After enrolling in the Electrical Engineering program at the University of Cincinnati, I was fortunate to be selected by the R. L. Drake Company as an engineering coop student. After being graduated from UC, I went on to work as an engineer for Drake as well as Cincinnati Electronics (formerly the military electronics division of AVCO). I and a fellow Drake engineering coop student who was also a Cincinnati Electronics employee went on to found Cincinnati Microwave, maker of Escort radar detectors. After later selling my part of that company to my former partner, I started Valentine Research, maker of the Valentine One radar locator.
Cheers,
