Ernest Samuel Moore, 90, of Charleston, former president of The S. Spencer Moore Company, passed away Dec. 31, 2003, in St. Francis Hospital. Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Alice.

He attended Hargrave Military Academy, Greenbrier Military School, Charleston High School and Alderson Broaddus College.

Sam was a lifelong resident of Charleston. He and his wife, Alice, worked many long hours at "Moore's," a business located across the street from the Library on Capitol Street, until its closing in 1987. Many Charleston youth had their business beginnings there, working as clerks in the office supply, office furniture, art, book or photo departments.

Sam's many hobbies included flying small aircraft as a young man, boating on the Kanawha River as a member of the Kanawha River Admirals and operating his Ham radio with the call sign W8NCD and as a member of the Kanawha Amateur Radio Club. He served in the Army National Guard during World War II.

He is survived by his daughter, Judith Ferguson of Round Hill, Va.; sons, Samuel Moore II of Alpharetta, Ga., twins, Richard and David Moore, both of Charleston; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at First Presbyterian Church, Charleston, with Dr. Douglas Heidt officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064.
