William B. "Bill" Ricks, 95, of Indianapolis, IN and formerly of Jacksonville, IL died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis.
He was born July 18, 1917 in Jacksonville; the son of William H. and Lydia Browne Ricks. He married Rachel Husted on June 5, 1949 and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Dr. Nancy L. Ricks of Plymouth, MA and Dr. Ann E. Leitze (husband, Harold) of Indianapolis, IN; two grandsons, Jason Leitze (wife, Amy) and Jeremy Leitze, all of Indianapolis, IN; two great grandchildren, Nicholas William Leitze and Elaina Renee Leitze; a sister, Alice Smith of Jacksonville; and two nephews, Rick and Doug Smith. He was preceded in death by a son, Jack Ricks in 1970.
Mr. Ricks was a graduate of the University of Illinois and served with the US Army during WW II. He was employed 25 years as the comptroller for MacMurray College in Jacksonville. He was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church and is a member of Harmony Lodge #3 AF & AM. Bill was active in Kiwanis International for many years including his service as president of the Jacksonville Golden K Kiwanis Club and as lieutenant governor for Division 29 of the Illinois.Eastern Iowa District of Kiwanis. Bill had a passion for vocal music and enjoyed barbershop singing. He was a former member of the Jacksonville Ferris Wheelers chorus and sang with a barbershop quartet known as "4-Cylinder-4". He later sang with his daughter, Ann, and son-in-law, Harold in a gospel group known as "The Pioneers". In addition, Bill was a life-long amateur radio operator and enjoyed boats, cars, planes, and motorcycles.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Friday, May 10, 2013, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 4:00 to 6:00 pm Thursday. Memorial gifts are suggested to Grace United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes Association.
