Dr. Rodney Staples "Rod" Starkweather was born on September 17, 1902, in Evanston, Illinois, to Frank H. Starkweather and Abbey Estelle Staples. His first 2-way contact was in 1915. By 1922, he was licensed in Evanston as 9EFG. That same year, while a student at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, he was licensed as 1CCB. Rod also was a founding member of the Dartmouth College Radio Association, where he operated 1YB.
Upon graduation from Dartmouth in 1924, and after some time in Europe for travel and study, Rod enrolled in Rush Medical College of University of Chicago, from which he received an M.D. degree in 1929. He then did postgraduate work in dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he wrote "An Evaluation of the Tuning Fork Tests in the Diagnosis of Syphilis." And on June 16, 1931, he married Katharine J. Dietrich, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin.
Rod practiced for many years as a dermatologist in the Evanston and Winnetka area. He also was an instructor of dermatology at the medical school of Northwestern University. He retired to Vero Beach, Florida, where he passed away on June 13, 1995.
