John R. Garing, 83, *address redacted* formerly of Pekin, passed away at 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights, Ill. He was born on March 3, 1926, in Urbana, Ill., to John E. and Hazel Barnhart Garing. He married Alberta M. Helms in Pekin on July 31, 1949, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Deborah (Daniel) Evans of Palos Hills and Georgia (Thomas) Abert of Los Banos, Calif.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson. He had been employed as an associate engineer by Commonwealth Edison, retiring in 1982 after 37 years of service. He had been a member of the Eagles Lodge 274 in Pekin, the Peoria Amateur Radio Club and the Powerton Playboys, and he had been a member and past president of the Instrument Society of America in Peoria. Funeral services for John will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at Woolsey Funeral Home in Pekin, with the Rev. Terry Edele officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior.
