Dr. John Lyle "Tav" Tavenner was born on Dec. 10, 1903, in Polo, Illinois, son of John and L. Tereesa Mund Tavenner. Tav graduated from Polo high school. His first contact was in 1919 as 9KY.
Tav studied medicine at Northwestern University and Cornell College, and did his clinical work at Ancker Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. He first practiced medicine in Waseca, Minnesota.
In 1936, as W9GNU, Tav was in Vienna for postgraduate work in surgery, and persuaded several Austrian hams to provide comments to QST regarding amateur radio there.
Tav settled in Dixon, Illinois, in the 1930s, later serving in the South Pacific as a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWII. After the war, he returned to Dixon, where he practiced medicine and lived with his wife, Helen Braun Dixon, and their two daughters. Tav passed away on April 22, 1989.
