INDIANAPOLIS - Walter Marlan Smith, age 97, of Indianapolis, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Westminster Village North in Indianapolis. Born on November 24, 1916 in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of Henry Smith, Jr. and Grace (Nannanga) Smith. He graduated from Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, Illinois in 1934. Mr. Smith married Margaret (Brachey) Smith on June 28, 1939.
He owned and operated Best Way Laundry in LaGrange. Mr. Smith also served as chairman of the board for LaGrange State Bank, was a member of Kiwanis International for over 60 years, and was a longtime member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in LaGrange. His hobbies included amateur radio operating and woodworking. He also enjoyed hiking and traveling in the motorhome.
Surviving him are his children, Marlan R. (Anne) Smith of Portage, Michigan; Peggy (Ron) Pritzke of Greenfield; and Barbara (Bill) McConnell of Carmel; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his wife, Margaret in 2006; parents; and sister, Grace Marian Saunders.
A Memorial Service will be held at Westminster Village North on Friday, December 27, at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield.
