Wayne J. Flickinger, 91, of Marietta passed away Friday, November 20, 2015.Wayne, born on November 27th, 1923 was inducted into the army on March 11, 1943. He was assigned to the 15th Port Signal Corps section. He served as First Scout and also in The Occupational Forces, 84th Infantry Division Rail-Splitters. He survived the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star for his efforts on the front lines in WWII. Wayne said “It was pretty rough, pretty dangerous because a lot of men were being killed and you never knew if it would be you or not.". He met his wife, Doris E. Lockwood, while stationed in England. They celebrated 70 happy years of marriage on January 23rd, 2015. Wayne attended Purdue University and Arizona State University and worked with Dr. Philo Farnsworth in color TV research. He was proud to have built the first TV station in his hometown. Wayne left Design Engineering for Field Engineering in Aerospace where he worked on the Space Shuttle Program and with the Apollo astronauts. Wayne was listed in Who’s Who publications and awarded many professional honors. Wayne’s lifetime hobby was Amateur Radio. He has held an advance class radio license since 1940 and was active with MARS Military Affiliate Radio System as well as a Life member of The Old Old Timers Club. Call signs W9BKJ, (W5OEV-W0OQV-W7HXH-W9OGI) Mr. Flickinger was survived by his wife, Doris E. Flickinger of Marietta; three daughters, Andrea Draney, her husband Bruce, Marilyn Grayson, her husband Charles and Shirley Langley as well as 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Brenda Flickinger Ross. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta with Father Allen officiating. Interment will take place at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. |
