Lyle Gordon Mastalio, 97, of Toluca passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Heritage Health Care in Minonk on Monday, December 25, 2017.
Gordon was born on August 16, 1920, in Toluca, a son of Peter and Daisy (Baker) Mastalio.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Marion (Henn) Mastalio; daughters, Kathleen (Steve) Foerster, Claudia (the late Howard) Builta and Carla (Tim) O'Connor; as well as grandchildren, Sarah (Brendan) Wenzel, Stephanie Foerster, Jeffrey (Claudia) Builta and Lindsey (John) Eichholz; and great-grandchildren, Makenzee and John Eichholz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Glenn Mastalio; sisters, Eloise Carrithers and Arlene Warfield; and nieces, Amy (Warfield) Petersen and Linda (Warfield) Paulson.
Gordon served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the European Theater in the 104th Infantry, Timberwolves Division.
Following WWII, Gordon was employed until retirement with the Toluca Oil Company, a family-owned business.
Gordon was a lifelong member of Antioch Christian Church, serving as a Deacon, Council member and member of the Cemetery Board. He was a member of the Toluca American Legion Post #440 for over 70 years.
Gordon was a charter member of Tall Oaks Country Club and golfed into his 90s. He was a licensed amateur radio ("HAM") for 80, having the call letters W9QKL.
Gordon found great pleasure fishing with his family and friends locally, as well as in Ontario, Wisconsin, Minnesota and New Jersey.
After retirement, Gordon enjoyed having coffee uptown with his buddies regularly. He will be remembered as a kind, hard-working man with a great sense of humor and a good voice. He enjoyed spending any time he could with his wife and daughters.
His funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, December 29, 2017, at Antioch Christian Church in Toluca, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Idell officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Toluca. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Calvert-Johnson & Froelich Memorial Home in Toluca, and for one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Easter Marshall County EMS or the Toluca American Legion Post #440.
