When it came to radio airwaves, Victor Voss took pride in being an electrical engineer at several stations, including being the chief engineer of WIND's AM station in Chicago during the war years.
Voss had a degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University, formerly known as Iowa State College. He also was the founder Gary radio station WWCA and WLOI in LaPorte.
"My dad loved his career and never tired of learning more about various forms of electronic media throughout his life," Mary Ann Hansen said. "His work was always a challenge he really enjoyed."
Hansen said her father was so knowledgeable in his field that he often helped troubleshoot for other local radio stations.
She said she always admired her father's intellect and respected his engineering talents.
Hansen said her father also played an integral role in his children's lives.
"My dad was a man of high principles who never compromised his integrity. He also mentored us to be the best we could be," his daughter said, noting that her father raised three generations of amateur radio broadcasters.
Hansen said even in her father's senior years, he continued to expand his intellectual horizons and had many interests, including engaging himself in the world of high tech.
"My dad was mentoring others and wrote many computer programs long past retirement age," his daughter said.
When he wasn't busy analyzing the workings of the radio station that was under his watch or getting an update about progress in the world of computers, Voss liked to spend time boating and fishing in the northern regions of Canada.
"He liked going after the bigger catches, like Walleye, Northerns and even the smaller pan fish," Hansen said.
His daughter said her father also enjoyed working on crossword puzzles
