Charles C. Honesty, 79, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who supported the creation of the Bronzeville Military Academy, died Sunday, Aug. 6, in his Chicago home.
Mr. Honesty was born in Memphis and raised in Chicago.
In 1942, he joined the 92nd Division, known as the Buffalo Soldiers, and fought in World War II. Mr. Honesty worked closely with the National Guard and Army Reserves and retired from the reserves in March 1981.
He was a research chemist at various government labs, including Argonne National Laboratory near Lemont, and with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
His wife, Lida Honesty, said her husband was proud of his involvement in the Army and his work at the academy.
Mr. Honesty was also a longtime amateur radio operator and belonged to Amateur Radio Experimenters Alliance Inc.
Other survivors include three sons, Robert, Edward and Jonathan; and three daughters, Anna and Judith Honesty and Susan Honesty Montague.
Visitation and a service at Martin Temple AME Zion Church, 6930 S. Cottage Grove Aveue, Chicago.
