Dwight W. Sorensen, 87, of South Kansas City, died July 16, 2007, at his daughter's home in Lee's Summit. Dwight was born in Irvington, New Jersey, to Samuel and Pauline Sorensen. He grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

He was a Captain in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II. Dwight retired in 1982 from the Kellogg Sales Company of Battle Creek, Michigan, after 32 years of employment.

Dwight, WA0ITU, was a member of the American Radio Relay League; the Quarter Century Wireless Association; and was past president and board member of the Kansas City Amateur Radio Club. He was a member of the Longview United Methodist Church since 1960 and served on various committees and the board of trustees. He was a past president of the Ruskin Hills Homes Association, and a member of the United Ostomy Association.

Dwight is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Elizabeth Thomson Sorensen, of the home; his daughter, Sandra Sorensen Riley and her husband, Terrence Riley, M.D., of Lee's Summit, Missouri; his American Field Service daughter, Maria Cristina de Gesche and her husband, Fernando, of Traiguen, Chile; his brother, Neil Sorensen and his wife, Nancy, of Sun City, Arizona; brother-in-law, William B. Thomson and wife, Ruby, of San Carlos, California; sister-in-law, Rebecca Thomson Rushing and husband, Warren, of Lakeland, Florida; sister-in-law, Nancy Thomson Hamilton and husband, Charles, of Lakeland, Florida; sister-in-law, Patricia Thomson McIntosh and husband, Douglas, of Upland, California; sister-in-law, Louise Thomson Lashley and husband, Howard, of Zephyrhills, Florida; numerous nephews, nieces and special friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Longview United Methodist Church, 7205 Longview Road, Kansas City, Missouri, 64134. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Longview United Methodist Church.
