John W. Soergel, 91, of East Syracuse passed away Friday June 10, 2016.
Born in Buffalo on January 12, 1925 the son of Elmer and Muriel Soergel. He was a graduate of Buffalo Technical High School, he also attended Sampson College and Syracuse University. He served in the United State Navy during World War II.
John was employed with Syracuse University for 38 years at Newhouse and also was a part time audio technician at the NYS Fair for 40 years.
He was a life member and Fellow of the Society of Broadcast Engineers, Commissioner of Longhouse Council Boy Scouts of America and a Silver Beaver recipient.
He held an Amateur Extra Class license, WA2DGC, was a member of the Radio Amateurs of Greater Syracuse, Liverpool Amateur Repeater Club and Quarter Century Wireless Association.
John was very active in the Friedens United Church of Christ before it closed in 2011 and was currently a member of the Collamer United Church.
He is predeceased by his parents and brother Robert. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Shirley; son David (Becky) of Pompey, Daughter Nancy of Murells Inlet, SC; two grandsons, Christopher and Max of SC; granddaughter Sarah of Pompey; a niece and 2 nephews in California and Arizona.
Calling hours are Monday June 13, 2016 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the R.H. Schepp & Son Minoa Chapel, 6530 Schepps Corners Road, Minoa. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday June 14 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Collamer United Church or the Rescue Mission.
