William J. Svec Jr., 86, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. Bill was born on January 3, 1935 in McKeesport, Pa. to the late William J. Svec Sr. and Mildred N. Svec. He was also predeceased by his brother, David C. Svec. Bill received his BA and MA in Music Education at Morehead State University in Kentucky. He began his teaching career at Morehead University, and then took a position at Wythe County High School. Bill later moved to Roanoke where he provided music education to students at Cave Spring High School and served as Fine Arts Supervisor for Roanoke County. His love of music and teaching was evident in his roles as conductor of the Roanoke Youth Symphony Orchestra, director of the Wytheville Community College Concert Band, and a founding member of the Winds of the Blue Ridge. He was a radio announcer for many years at WYVE in Wytheville, for WVWR - and later when it became WVTF - in Roanoke. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, Virginia Band and Orchestra Association, American School Band Director's Association, and was a licensed amateur radio operator. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Joy W. Svec; children, Terri (Wayne), Kevin (Heather), Keith (Tanya), Andrew (Lisa), Steven, Laura, and Joel (Tarra); grandchildren, Abigail, Matthew, Ryan, Michael, Eric, and Bethany; brothers, Ronald (Brenda) of Missouri, and Michael (Judy) of Maryland; sister-in-law, Sandra of Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date. Funeral services will be private.
