WA5ETK Gene A. Bitner Amarillo, TX QCWA # 21771 Chapter 141 |
As a boy (1940s) in Southwestern Oklahoma, I used to be fascinated with radio, listening to our family's "Silvertone" AC-DC set.
That interest grew after we moved to Littlefield, Texas. My school counselor helped me get a job at our local 250-watter, KVOW, when I was 16. But my operation on 1.490 MHz was only one-way, and I really wanted to become a ham!
I finally got my license as WN5ETK in November of 1962, at the age of 20. I enjoyed the all-CW operations, especially on 15 meters, for that first year.
After obtaining my General license, I eventually got into RTTY, AMTOR, Packet and SSTV-- I still love the digital modes, and I currently run quite a bit of PSK31.
I retired from teaching 4th and 6th graders in Amarillo Public Schools in 1997 and now have plenty of time for my hobbies-- that also also include camping and travel (the little that I can afford).
