Col. Paul William Deppert, 87, San Antonio, TexasLt. Col. Paul William Deppert, age 87, died peacefully on July 14, 2009, while in hospice care at Air Force Village I in San Antonio, Texas. He is survived by his beloved wife, Vera Kathleen Deppert; and two daughters, Paula Munroe, wife of Dallas Munroe of Houston, Texas, and Lee Khan, wife of Shahid Khan of Randolph Center, Vermont. His only grandchild, Sultana Lee Khan, also lives in Randolph Center.Lt. Col. Deppert was born March 26, 1922, to George Calvin and Mabel Ruth Deppert, in Grammer, Indiana. He graduated from Jackson Township High School in Decatur County and went on to DePauw University where he received a BS in Math and Physical Education. A lifelong love of basketball was compounded during his tenure on the DePauw varsity basketball team. He was also a member of the Delta Chi fraternity. He later went on to earn his Master's in Physical Education and Guidance from Indiana University.During WWII, Lt. Col. Deppert joined the Army Air Corps and graduated from aerial navigation school. He was a navigator in the 389th Bomb Group in England and completed 35 combat missions. During the Korean War, he was recalled and was stationed in France with the 126th Bomb Group.A passionate educator for many years, he taught mathematics and physical education for one year in Maryland Heights, Missouri. Continuing to teach math, he also began to coach basketball at Hope High School for four years. In Batesville, Indiana, he was an elementary principal for four years before moving to Lafayette Jefferson High School, where he taught math for two years and then served as a guidance counselor for 20 years. Forever continuing his education and preparation for his students, he attended Ball State University, Purdue University and the University of Missouri during the summers. He also enhanced his military career by attending the Academic Instructors course at Maxwell Air Force Base and the Personnel School at Scott Air Force Base. He was a member of the 434th Troop Carrier Wing and served as a squadron navigator while also earning his senior navigator rating. Paul and Rusty Deppert lived in Mt. Home, Arkansas, for 8 years after he retired from teaching. In 1992 they moved to San Antonio, Texas. |
