Dr. John P. Murnane died peacefully Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. The son of Marion and Cornelius J. Murnane, he was born in Andover, Mass. Known to his friends as Jack, he served as an aerial photographer in the Navy during World War II. Following his service, he attended Boston University. Graduating with the degree in Biology of AB in 1953, he went on to earn an MA in 1954 and a Ph.D. in 1969. Professor Murnane taught for 32 years at American International College in Springfield, Mass., retiring to Sorrento in 1989. He and his family summered on Swans Island for over 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Anne (Polley), and their son, Richard, and his wife, Sarah C. Palmer. He is survived also by his sisters-in-law, Marcia Faith Vartabedian, and Marjorie Alburger and her husband, Thomas. Jack Murnane was an active amateur radio operator, with the call letters WB1APD. He maintained a lifelong interest in birdwatching, and became an accomplished bird carver during his retirement. |
