LT.CMDR James Lee Bennett Jim Bennett, born July 3, 1927 passed away July 23, 2009 after a short illness, with his wife and grandson by his side. He was just 82. Jim was born in Ottawa, KS, the son of Eva Mae (Lee) and James Lawton Bennett. He lived in Yates Center, KS, with his maternal grandmother and graduated from High School. He joined the U.S. Navy and went to Great Lakes, IL where he was sent to Japan as a Mailman 3rd Class, at the close of WWII. After his service in Japan, he went to live in Kansas City, MO with his father, his stepmother and half-brother. He graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence with a degree in political science. He rejoined the Navy and went to Newport, RI to the Officer's Training School, graduated, and served on the USS Boxer until he was ordered to CINCPAC Fleet. He met his wife, Diane Adele (Hantover) Bennett, shortly after and they were married for 55 years. They had four children, a grandson, and two great-grandchildren. He earned a master's degree in business management from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He retired after 27 years and moved to Austin, TX. He spent three years at the Episcopal Theological Seminary and then went to San Marcos, TX where he earned a master's degree in education. He later attended the University of Texas and earned a master's degree in education counseling. Jim taught at Round Rock High School and at Westwood High School. He studied Counseling and was a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counselor. He later went back to the Episcopal Seminary and was certified as a Grief Counselor. Jim is survived by his wife, Diane; daughter, Jeanne Ann Morgan and her second husband, Paul Morgan; daughter, Diane Elizabeth Bennett; son, James Matthew Bennett and his wife Christine; and daughter, Danielle Lee (Bennett) Sullivan; grandson, Samuel Christopher Bennett-Hurta and his wife Courtney; and two great-grandchildren, Nadalia and Aaron. Jim chose to be cremated and his urn will be placed at Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church on August 15, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. All who knew Jim, please come and celebrate his life |
