John Nelson Elwood of Phoenix Arizona passed away at Hospice of the Valley on February 1, 2018. He was 96. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Edith Elwood, his three sons John, Hank, and Karl, and his daughter Carol and their spouses Ann, Joan and Cynthia. "He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Hank, brother Robert, sister Francis and son in law Stephan."
John was born and raised in Corning New York. He and his twin brother Hank were both Eagle Scouts and very proud of that accomplishment. John joined the military at the age of 21 and met his wife Edith shortly after. He was in 328th Fighter Control Squadron and was a Signal Operator which began his lifelong passion with Morse code and telegraph keys. He and Edith married in 1945 and traveled extensively with the military. He served during World War II in Germany, Italy and France and later spent three years in England participating in the Berlin airlift. John retired from the FAA in 1975 and enjoyed every day of his retirement. After the military John kept up with his squadron members and published a squadron letter every Christmas for 42 years. As of his death there are only four known living members in his squadron. In 1996 John published a comprehensive list for identifying and dating Vibroplex telegraph keys. His personal key collection is one of the largest in the country. He was an officer of the society of wireless pioneers and spent many hours in his radio room participating in Mars nets and receiving and transmitting code with other operators all over the world. He would go to sleep at night with a headset on listening to code. Sommething Edith said took some getting used to!
John had a huge repertoire of jokes and could come up with one for any occasion. His Irish sense of humor could light up any room. He was a master of the English language And didn't hesitate to let you know if you had your syntax wrong.
A graveside military service will be held at the National Cemetery of Arizona Thursday, February 8th 2018 at 10:30 AM 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85024.
