About Douglas G. “Doug” Mc Nair

Greetings and welcome!

First licensed in October 1995, I feel fortunate to be a member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association. My first experience with radio transmission was during our fifth-grade science fair, where one of the students had a working AM Radio Transmitter Kit from Radio Shack. Fascinated by wireless, I had to have one, followed by many more of the amazing project kits from the store!

I studied electronic communications in high school. Our instructor, Allen Zimmerman, W3SCT (SK), introduced our class to amateur radio. The theory was easy; however, Morse code did not come easily. Lacking the discipline at the time, I gave up, as code was then a requirement for all licenses.

When I learned about the no-code Technician license, I sent for the study book and quickly earned my first ticket. I immediately became enthused with packet radio and wanted more. RTTY was next. With the advent of personal computers and the aid of Morse code learning programs, I practiced three times a day for three months and passed the General test at 13 words per minute.

My callsign is the first one I was assigned, and amateur radio truly is the World’s Greatest Hobby!

Yours in service,
Doug
